As an NY Islander’s fan I’ll always remember legendary NY sportcaster Bill Mazer saying “7:11, lucky numbers for the good guys”, in a sports special about the Islanders winning their first Stanley Cup over the Philadelphia Flyers on an overtime goal by Bobby Nystrom (assists by Lorne Henning and Wayne Merrick). But on to the new from the week of July 11th, 2011.

Aliph, the company behind the Jawbone noise cancelling Bluetooth headsets, just raised $70M. I love their products. I just got my second Jawbone, the new Era, last week. Maybe they’ll invest all that money in making better earbuds.

Citrix buys Cloud.com to enhance the virtualization giant’s cloud infrastructure offering. Cloud.com is already a major player in the market and has a very high-profile client in Zynga. CloudAve’s Krishnan Subramanian provides great analysis of the impact of the deal on Citrix’s business and their competitors.

Google beats Wall Street EPS estimates by almost $1 and shares are up.

The concerns around Google’s use of Java in Android seem to keep escalating, especially with Oracle asking for Google CEO Larry Page to testify and Judge Alsup’s recent notice which references ‘willful infringement’ and could result in treble damages. If you’re interested in this story, you’ve got to be reading Mueller’s blog.

Tom Friedman writes that you need to be thinking like a tech startup when looking for a job in today’s market.

Building great applications is important, but it’s wasted effort if they can’t be deployed easily. F5’s Lori MacVittie introduces the application deployment lifecycle and says the enterprise needs to focus more effort on improving the application deployment process.

Is Microsoft moving to a single OS unifying the desktop, phone, gaming and home media platforms? Apparently those were the hints dropped at last week’s Worldwide Partner Conference. But I don’t quite buy it unless Microsoft moves to a lighter weight Chrome-y style OS. And it’s harder to comprehend under a Ballmer-led Microsoft. Time will tell.

Citrix isn’t the only virtualization technology provider working on enhancing their cloud infrastructure play, as VMWare introduces its Comprehensive Cloud Infrastructure Suite.

With all the hype around Google+, that just adds to the complexity of managing social profiles and across tools in the enterprise. Enter OpenSocial 2.0.

On Friday July 15, the ITC handed down an initial determination in Apple’s favor saying that HTC’s Android products infringed 2 Apple patents. If this determination is upheld, it can have a major impact on not just HTC, but other Android licensees. Fantastic analysis by Florian Mueller.

I’m gonna write up something separate on Google IO, but in case you missed it, here’s the other stuff of note that happened last week:

Microsoft bought Skype for $8.5B. Every Skype user in the world fears the folks in Redmond will kill Skype intentionally or unintentionally. The good news seems to be that Skype will a standalone division of Microsoft, ensuring the product and brand will continue to exist (for now). Ballmer promised that Skype will “continue to support non-Microsoft devices”. Overall I haven’t seen many comments that are bullish on the acquisition (other than from Steve Ballmer), except for this one that suggests Microsoft is “buying an $8bn option on the future of the mobile telephony industry,” if VoLTE doesn’t pan out.

It’s deals like this latest one with Starwood, that gives you Starpoints for check-ins, that might create some actual utility for Foursquare, now that the novelty has worn off.

Expedia rolls out a flurry of new mobile apps including its first Android app and new iPhone and Android apps for its Hotels.com brand. This is the first tangible results of their purchase of Mobiata.

A lot of people really like Airbnb. When I was at I went to a party at a place someone rented with the service. But I always came back to the same concern about the concept – I don’t know a damn thing about the person I’m renting from or what I can really expect from the place I’m staying at. Well social networking to the rescue <sarcasm>. Airbnb Social Connections lets you tap into your social graph via Facebook Connect to help vet your choices. It’s a step in the right direction at least.

Tired of paying high airfares? This New York Times article explains how you can beat them with “hidden-city ticketing” strategies. Pretty cool.

HomeAway’s acquisition spree continues in advance of its IPO. This time the target is Second Porch, which will help shore up HomeAway’s social strategy.

NetSuite is looking more and more like a very serious player in the enterprise after a series of announcements at its SuiteWorld 2011 user conference this year. Forrester’s Kate Leggett provides a nice summary of what happened.

SilverRail’s train keeps on a rolling with their latest partnership with Sabre’s GetThere travel management and expense system.

Nilay Patel has a fantastic piece analyzing Skyhook Wireless’ 750 page complaint against Google. Reading it will be time well spent.

Many people consider Google Microsoft’s largest competitor. But perhaps VMWare is real stalking horse as the cloud gains in importance.

A lot of stuff happened while I was OpenTravel’s 2010 Advisory Forum in Seattle this past week:

I’d be remiss if I didn’t start with the successful IPO of Amadeus (AMA.MC), the largest GDS and leader in global travel technology solutions…and Ness Software Product Labs’ signature client in the travel technology space.

Apple buys Siri. It’s not just mobile-web search, Siri also has the ability to learn preferences and not just provide better results back, but help complete activities or business processes like making dinner reservations or booking a flight. It should be interesting to see how the iPhone experience evolves as Siri deepens the integration with iPhone OS.

Salesforce.com and VMWare announce VMForce. Looks like Salesforce finally admitted that APEX was holding back the Force.com Platform-as-a-Service business and partnered with VMWare to enable direct Java-based development on the rest of the Force.com infrastructure. Good analysis by Enterprise Irregulars Phil Wainwright, Bob Warfield and Brian Sommer.

5 reasons iPhone v. Android isn’t Mac v. Windows. Well said.

Another Top 5 list. This time it’s the untapped or under-exploited opportunities in travel. Mobile payments, re-booking top the list, but read on to see what other opportunities lie in wait.

Steve Jobs’ official position on Apple v. Adobe Flash. Nothing terribly new (or not already said by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber), but if it’s written by Steve…and he gives it almost 1700 words, you should at least read it.

Excellent analysis of what Apple’s announcement of iAds will mean.

Tech Crunch’s Michael Arrington announces that with the recent announcements at the f8 conference we’re officially in the ‘age of Facebook’.

Forrester’s JP Gownder offers an opinion on why consumers will pay more for products and uses the Mac as a shining example. I only have two issues with the analysis. First I think that Gownder mistakenly equates repeat purchase with brand loyalty. But more importantly, the piece reads as if the three categories can have similar impact. As I’m in the middle of Steven Sinek’s “Start With Why”, I believe “self-selection” (as Gownder calls it) reason is by far the most influential. But if you read the book, self-selection has a lot to do with whether or not a company has a compelling “why”.

On top of the Amadeus IPO, two big mergers in the travel industry: Hertz buys Dollar Thrifty and United and Continental Airlines are set to merge under the United moniker. And it increasingly looks like Google will buy ITA. A lot of activity for sure.

American Airlines is trying to make GDSs, distribution channels to embrace XML in order to access ancillary services, which otherwise can’t be done prior to arrival at the airport. However, American insists there will be no incremental costs to book via the direct connect channel. GDSs probably don’t want to have to work through Farelogix, but also don’t want to modernize their feeds from EDIFACT to XML on a supplier-by-supplier basis.

Redmonk’s James Governor explains how VMWare isn’t getting into the relational database business, but that doesn’t mean they’re not in the database business.

First broken by BusinessWeek, it looks like Google is going to buy ITA Software for more than $1B, fully ushering in Google to the travel meta-search game (which they’re kind of in already with their recent integration of hotel results into Google Maps. If this is true, it’s not good news for Kayak.com nor for Microsoft’s Bing Travel, the current leader in meta-search who also leverages ITA’s technology. Good analysis on the rumor from Tnooz.

Blippy offers a lame explanation of how credit card information ended up on Google. The “it’s less bad than it looks” line is the sort of non-apology apology that I have grown to expect and loath from companies and celebrities. What I’d like to know is whether Blippy went through PCI-DSS certification or if they even know what that is.

2 great posts by Don Dodge on what makes successful startups here and here. Really nice to see him getting back to good content rather than shilling for Google.

Last week Red Hat’s CTO Brian Stevens introduced a new initiative called Deltacloud that has a very lofty goal of simplifying the process of invoking cloud services via a new unified standard. It address interoperability which can be an important challenge in cloud computing for ISVs. Out of the box they have some pretty good market coverage, supporting Red Hat’s own Enterprise Virtualization, VMWare ESX and Amazon EC2 with support for Rackspace to follow.

This is a good start, but I think that this is about as far as Red Hat’s going to be able to take this. Nowhere is there any mention of, nor do I expect support for, some of the other leading Cloud platforms from Microsoft, Oracle or Salesforce.com. And this highlights the both the problems with the mega-vendors and the open source movement. Open Source levels the playing field, but that is diametrically opposed to what the mega-vendors like Microsoft and Oracle want, particularly Microsoft who loves their proprietary standards. And between Microsoft and Oracle, they control so much of the ISV ecosystem, that I don’t see how Red Hat’s Deltacloud gets any traction. Even Stevens’ own statement talks about “creating a buzz”. Well maybe for one day.
